Objective Setting Skills

Setting clear goals and objective help to ensure everyone is working together to achieve the main objectives of the company so both the company and employees benefit.  Objectives clarify processes and priorities, which help managers and staff allocate time and resources in an efficient way.  The management cycle of setting objective is defined over three phases:

Phase 1 – The Planning Phase, Month 1-2

This is where managers and employees meet to discuss how to plan outcomes for their department over a twelve-month period. Performance objectives and development objectives are set and resources are allocated to attain these goals.

Phase 2 – The Monitoring Phase, Month 3-9

Regular meetings are set up to allow people check-in and discuss ongoing results so effective planning can take place.  Management review and refine the results and make adjustments due to any changes in their circumstances. You will learn how to identify and remove barriers to keep company goals and objectives on track.  During month 10 and 11, the parties prepare their appraisals separately in preparation for the end of year review.

Phase 3 – Annual Review, Month 12

The review takes place to discuss  overall performance and to establish if goals and objectives were met. The groundwork for the next cycle is planned and participants are invited to identify potential based on the previous 12 month cycle.

The course help you understand how to apply the management tool known as SMART.  This acronym stands for S=Specific, M=Measurable, A=Attainable, R=Relevant, T=Timely.   The application of this tool helps management identify relevant and attainable goals. Objectives are built around specific deadlines and language which will help ensure everyone focus remains on their shared goals.
