Infection Control Training

Infections can, and are, often as a result of direct healthcare intervention, such as surgical treatment, or from coming into contact with an infection.  People are often especially susceptible to infection in a healthcare environment and so it is crucial for those who work in a healthcare environment to be vigilant about the dangers of patients contracting infection and have infection control training and awareness.

Where there has been invasive surgery or procedure, otherwise perfectly healthy people can often be vulnerable to infection so extremely high standards of hygiene are crucial in a healthcare environment.  Some people are more susceptible to infection including:

  • Pregnant women
  • Babies and children under the age of two
  • Those with compromised immune systems
  • Those with health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and lung conditions.

Around 300000 people in the UK develop an infection acquired within the NHS. The most common of these are respiratory infections, urinary tract infections and surgical site infections.

NICE, The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, have produced “Quality Standard QS61” which offers health professional advice on the prevention of infections, with further links to supporting organisations, such as MRSA Action UK.

This infection control training course will start by defining infection prevention and control and explains the impact and outcomes of both good and bad infection control. It then goes into details the legislation that applies to infection control, the different types of microorganisms, how bacteria are transmitted, the chain of infection and prevention.
